Jonathan Sage Plays Clarinet As You Have Never Heard It

Following on our last standing room only event in Limerick, Soundings is pleased to present inventive clarinetist Jonathan Sage. The diverse and exciting programme includes specially-commissioned works for clarinet and electronics by English composer Alex Harker and prize-winning Irish composer Jonathan Nangle. Miniatures by Irish composer Amanda Feery and American clarinetist-composers Evan Ziporyn (of New York's famed Bang-On-A-Can All Stars) and William O. Smith will test Sage's abilities.

For contrast you will hear the basset clarinet, a special 18th-century invention, in pieces by Scottish composer William Sweeney and Irish composer Garrett Sholdice. The show will also include pillars of contemporary solo clarinet repertoire, such as Elliot Carter's Gra and movements from the late Karlheinz Stockhausen's Amour.

At the age of 23, Sage already has an impressive track record as a clarinetist specialising in contemporary music, having performed widely as a soloist and in ensemble. His very considerable technical skill, mastery of extended techniques and openness to sonic experimentation make him an ideal interpreter of new music. Sage already has a strong relationship with the contemporary music of Ireland, having premiered specially-composed pieces by Irish composers and performed in a Chimera Ensemble performance of Donnacha Dennehy's Junk Box Fraud.

Also on the bill will be two new works for electronics. The first is by doctoral student and popular DJ John Greenwood, who has already delighted Limerick audiences with his gripping sonic landscapes in solo works and collaborations for dance. "Python In A Toy Box" is an electroacoustic work based on gesture.

The second is by is by composer, producer, researcher and educator Robert Sazdov, who has performed works in North and South America, China, Czech Republic, France, Macedonia, New Zealand, Romania and his native Australia. He has won awards from the International Computer Music Competition, Musica Nova International Electro-acoustic Competition, Palmares de 33e Concours Internationaux de Musique et d'Art Sonore Electroacoustiques de Bourges and others. We will be premiering his eight channel piece "Let All Mortal Souls Remain Silent."

These works are presented on the best multi-channel audio system in Ireland. Those who have heard it need no further description!
